2) If it is the backplane, wouldn't the other three disks on that row be showing missing? Can I shut down the server and move the "missing" disk to an empty drive slot and see if it works? SAS 6/iR controller showed a degraded RAID 1 with Phys Disk 0 failed. Replaced drive with a new drive and it shows missing in slot 0. Moved the new drive to slot 4 and added as a HOT spare and it is resyncing the RAID 1 MIRROR. Ran Diagnostics on controller and it shows OK, reseated all cables, drives, backplane and controller card to no avail.

UEXT is another with a lot of modules that is only 3.3v but does specify pins for serial/i2c/spi. It's also dirt cheap (an off the shelf 5 slot backplane from Olimex is £2).
